Love rock ‘n roll music? BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad is a music, slice of life and, in a way, adventure manga by Harold Sakuishi.
Yukio Tanaka, a.k.a. Koyuki, is the “almost” is just another normal 14-year old high schooler. Life has been acceptable for Koyuki, just getting by, surviving the ins and, mostly, outs of high school life. Everything changed when he tried to protect a dog that resemble’s Frankenstein’s stitched-up body and its owner Ryusuke Minami. Ryusuke is a rock band guitarist and he soon influences Koyuki to listen to different rock music, specially that of Dying Breed.
The story focuses on the founding of their group Beck, the relationship between the band members, several fall-outs caused by a producer, and Koyuki’s fascination for Ryusuke’s sister Maho.
Beck has become a cult music manga classic. It reference different figures of rock ‘n roll – John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Bob Marley and many more. If you’ve seen the anime, better read the manga. The anime barely touches the complete story of Beck.
I’ve completed 102 chapters of manga in three days. Worth the time!
