It’s ironic that Pilipinos are more connected to the Western world than we are with our geographical neighbors.
This has significantly changed recently due to the increasing reach of the Internet. Active participation of SEA countries in different academic activities, exchange programs and commerce.
Today, I encountered the word “terbaik”. With Hilda‘s help, I found out that it means “best.”
I knew from watching an old Malay movie (I forgot the title) that there are similarities in the words and meanings.
Examples:
- Langit – Sky
- Sakit – Sick, Pain
- Bulan – Month
- Kami – Us, We
- Kita – Us, We
After some more readings, I realized that there are similar words. Malay’s “ini” has the same meaning as “kini” of Bisaya; same for the word Malay’s “itu” which has the same meaning as Tagalog’s “ito.” Other similar sounding words with the same or almost the same meanings:
- Tolong (MY) – Tulong (PH) – Help
- Cinta (My) – Sinta (PH) – Love
- Tankai (MY), Tangkay (PH) – Stem
- Butir (MY), Butil (PH) – Small Particle
- Kamu (MY), Kamo (PH - Bisaya) – You, You All
Terima kasih, Hilda. :)
